All temporary works designed by our expert team at Edge Structural Design conform to British Standard BS5975, which provides guidelines for risk categorisation, responsibilities, and design procedures, thus establishing the necessary standards and procedures for safety and accountability.

Our temporary works designs cover a wide spectrum of requirements

From making sure hoardings can withstand high winds to the installation of huge beams and steel lintels. They include:

Working platforms, ground support and crane mats – stable bases for heavy machinery like cranes and piling rigs. We calculate the required size and placement of spreader plates and outriggers to distribute the load safely.

Scaffolding – we can check third-party scaffolding designs to make sure they meet safety standards and regulations.

Site hoardings – designing posts and fittings to protect from high winds and other hazards, and kentledge systems that remove the need for ground excavations.

Propping systems – calculating the size and number of needle beams, acro props and other supports used for safety and stability during construction or renovation.

Edge barriers – designs to ensuring workers stay safe on roofs and other elevated areas.

Formwork – checking third party formwork design necessary to hold concrete in place while it sets and hardens. Essential for creating concrete walls, columns, and other structural elements.

Temporary building stability – assessing the temporary stability of a building for and during the remodelling process.

Here to make a difference by being different

Edge Structural Design aims to redefine the role of civil and structural engineering by incorporating creativity, efficiency, and sustainability.

We believe in fostering an environment where innovative ideas thrive, and solutions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each project regardless of scale.

By moving beyond traditional methodologies and adopting an innovative perspective, we strive to collaborate with our clients to reshape perceptions and illustrate that structural engineering can be both avant-garde and approachable.

What you need:

What our clients say…

“Our client provided us with a unique challenge to re-design an existing house and make better use of the site. This project offered a great opportunity but would require major structural alterations to ‘open-up’ the property and allow it to reach its’ full potential.  After many concept schemes and much negotiation and contemplation, we finally reached a design that our client and ourselves were eager to proceed with. We required the services of a structural engineer with experience of working with existing buildings and who, more importantly, able to share our vision to deliver a clean and contemporary atmosphere.

It was essential for us to appoint an engineer with a sensitive approach to aesthetics; having collaborated on various previous projects, we were confident that Edge Structural Design would fulfil our requirements and our client’s expectations. Edge were very competent throughout the design and construction phases and Penny (Edge’s project engineer), came to be an important member of the project team; ourselves and the contractor, found Edge to be reliable and responsive as construction works evolved and advanced.

Following completion, ourselves and the client were very pleased with the result: a light and modern family home which now enjoys fantastic views and a connectivity to the surrounding site which Edge’s concise and detailed work help create. The success achieved on this project, has already encouraged us to collaborate with Edge on other projects and we are confident we will continue to work with them on future projects.”

“Edge Structural Design LTD, I found on the internet after being let down by my previous structural engineers.

I dealt with Penny Clark, who I found to be very professional and came across as someone I could liaise with comfortably during the process of providing me with the calculations I required. I operate a local building company and I am often required to provide steel calculations for projects, therefore as a result of the prompt and professional service I received from Edge, I will not hesitate to use them for future projects and would highly recommend them.”

“We recommend Edge Structural Design to our clients as their attention to detail on all things structural is second to none and really helps ensure builders have all the necessary information for a successful project start to finish.”

“Edge Structural Design joined the Extraspace team as our engineering partner for a project in Oldham to deliver Northmoor Academy.

This was a difficult 3 tier site which was occupied by the former Grange Secondary School. The scope of works involved the development of the site to include all demolition, reshaping of ground, retaining walls, pathways, tiered external seating, gas membrane detailing, ground stabilisation and the construction of a new school.

Edge were a key partner in the design element and continued on the project through the construction phase.

The project was highly successful, delivered on time and within budget and we look forward to working with Edge on future projects”

“Edge were an integral part of the design team responsible for the delivery of the new Royton Leisure Centre. Having worked with Edge previously I knew that we would receive a high standard of service along with flexibility.  Throughout the build process Edge responded dynamically, conscious of both cost and time constraints. Their practical approach combined with knowledge of various construction solutions, assisted us in completing the project early for a delighted customer.”

“In the midst of a major building project on our home, we had to switch structural engineers part way through the build, as new ideas were needed to be able to construct the property we desired. Edge managed to be instructed in a short space of time, come up with new solutions and provide us with the calculations and details needed to continue with the build in the way we wanted it. A great help and a professional result all round.”
